How often do you think about things that are impacting your hormones?
My guess is, not very often!
But if you’re struggling with brain fog, weight gain and exhaustion, I bet you don’t waste much time blaming yourself for how you feel.
As if they are all signs of your innate inadequacy. (Read: SO NOT TRUE)
Instead of blaming yourself or believing there is just something wrong with you, let’s take a closer look at what your body is really doing.
There is a powerful connection between food, stress, and hormones.
Stress isn’t just about feeling overwhelmed – it’s a full body experience that throws your hormones into chaos.
When you are perpetually stressed (most of us are), your body produces more cortisol – your body’s stress hormone – which then…
- Signals your body to store fat, especially around your midsection
- Disrupts sleep, making you feel even more exhausted
- Triggers cravings for sugar and processed foods
- Messes with your mood, leaving you anxious, irritable, and/or blue
The food you eat can either fuel this stress cycle or help calm it down.
Let’s also look at blood sugar, insulin resistance, and weight management.
If you’ve ever felt like your cravings were running the show – like when you know you should eat something balanced and nourishing, but instead you’re standing at the kitchen counter eating an uncooked Pop Tart straight from the package?
This is an example of a blood sugar rollercoaster in action.
When you’re tired and struggling to kick your brain into gear, you reach for quick and easy food fixes to change how you feel.
Inevitably, you’ll reach for something with sugar or caffeine, or refined carbs to create that instant “lifting” effect you’re searching for.
And voila! It works!
But with that “lift” comes the blood sugar spike. Before you know it, you’ve cued the cycle. Because what goes up, must come down. That spike leads to a crash, which then has you reaching for another “lift”. More sugar, caffeine and refined carbs. Spike! Then the inevitable crash.
These ups and downs put an extra strain on your insulin levels, making it harder for your body to burn fat and regulate hunger.
Over time, this can lead to insulin resistance – where the receptors on your cells stop responding to insulin the way they should – creating even more cravings, fatigue, stubborn weight gain, and hormonal chaos.
Your body, being its brilliant hard-working self, is simply responding to what you’re giving it. Nothing more, nothing less.
If it’s not clear to you yet, food can either be a medicine for your body and a balm for your hormones… or a complete wrecking ball for both!
If you find yourself on this “wrecking ball rollercoaster”, please know that the way you feel is your body’s way of asking for support.
If you want to reclaim your energy, release stubborn weight, feel clear, grounded, and resourced in your life, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
