As much as we might want to believe that life is safe, there are no guarantees that this is actually true. There are realities and truths in the world where people ARE going to be harmed.
It would be out of integrity for me to tell you, or my son, or anyone, “You’re not going to get hurt” because there is a reality that it may happen. The key is to no let your fears stop you from actually living, experiencing and enjoying life.
One of the most powerful things you can do, especially in times like these, is to learn how to listen to and befriend your fears.
Because experiencing fear is part and parcel of being human.
We all feel it. Fear is an integral part of growth, change and expansion, especially when you’re about to live into something bigger or different for yourself.
You may have learned that if fear is present it means there’s something wrong with you, that you’re weak, you can’t have what you want, you can’t get there, or that you should feel ashamed and hide how you feel.
In all likelihood, nobody ever modeled how to listen to or befriend your fears to you. Instead, you were probably taught how to deny, ignore, suppress, override, fight or numb out to your fears – which is a powerful recipe for letting your fears control and manage you.
When you hold your fears at arm’s length and fight them, the results can be devastating. Not befriending your fears can lead to…
… Procrastination and inaction|
Lack of inspiration and excitement
Never feeling like you’re enough
Self-sabotage
Anxiety and stress
Depression
Lack of confidence
Anger and frustration
Overwhelm and exhaustion
Powerlessness
A whole host of health issues
Sleeplessness
Abandoning yourself and your dreams
Guilt and shame
Losing connection with your true self
Jealousy, resentment, victimhood and powerlessness
Staying stuck
Playing small and dimming your light
… and more.
Fear can be slippery and subtle because it may not actually look like fear. Instead, it can be tricky and show up as very justifiable reasons for why you can’t, shouldn’t, won’t or couldn’t do the thing you want to do.
It can seduce us into stale comfort and make you believe you are being very reasonable, rational and safe when in fact, you are lowering your standards, settling for less, tolerating things you’ve actually outgrown, and stalling your growth and potential.
Without specific tools, resources and support, fear can be super difficult to navigate on your own.
But what if fear could be something to feel excited about?
What if feeling afraid actually meant that you’re engaged with life? That something is important to you? That you care? That you’re in the process of stretching, growing, learning and evolving?
In my book fear can feel (very) uncomfortable. It’s supposed to! But it’s not something to feel ashamed of, or to judge yourself about. For me, fear is an ally. It’s a powerful wisdom keeper.
When I press pause on all of the things I was taught to believe about fear, that very thing I was taught to fight and avoid can teach me something I need to know.
How cool is that?
The idea of holding your fears as sacred and knowing how to glean the wisdom from them might feel completely foreign to you. But imagine navigating the rest of 2020 and beyond without being held hostage by your fears.
What dreams or goals do keep putting off – even if for very justifiable reasons?
Where do you feel stuck or stalled or anxious or powerless in your life?
What desire feels too risky, too daring, too big for you?
Fear doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks, or keep you caught in a loop of self-sabotage, self-sacrifice or self-induced misery.
Fear is a call to courage, to where you are being called to grow, and to the wisdom of what your soul wants to experience next.
Imagine knowing how to be present with your fear in a way that allows you to rise, expand, achieve, succeed, lead and truly live in a fulfilling and deeply self-honoring way.
This is what becomes possible when you listen to and befriend your fear.
