Have you ever gone through a period of time in your life when you knew you needed to do something, or make a change, but for whatever reason, you just couldn’t get yourself to do something about it?
You probably knew exactly what was making you feel so uncomfortable, miserable even, and maybe you even had a clear sense of what you needed to do to remedy the situation. But still, you just couldn’t or wouldn’t make the decision or take the action that would make it look and feel better.
It’s NOT a good feeling place to be!
My son is in one of these places right now. He’s teething, and he’s truly uncomfortable in his body. He gets out of sorts and cranky in the mid-afternoons, and it’s quite clear that a nap, along with some homeopathic teething tablets, is really going to help him feel better.
But he is resisting these naps intensely. He cries and cries and cries. He’s even starting to throw little mini tantrums – he arches is back, his cries go from upset to outright inconsolable – and there’s nothing that will help him feel better… but to TAKE. A. NAP.
So, as I watch him fight and resist that very thing that’s going to make everything feel better, and as I step in and do my best to console him and help him take a nap, I started to think about how this same scenario takes place in all of our lives.
For instance, you may know that something as simple as getting out of your yoga clothes and into a pretty outfit for your “work from home” job will make you feel better about yourself. But maybe you resist doing it because you know no one is going to see you, and maybe it feels like it’s a waste of time or energy to do so.
Maybe you know that applying a little lipstick before you head into the office makes you feel beautiful and like you’re “on you’re A-game”. But you just don’t seem to make the time for it, even though it only takes 15 seconds.
Maybe you’re clear that there are some areas in your life that need some upgrades. Perhaps the wallpaper in your bedroom is from the 60’s and it’s peeling off the walls, and a little TLC and a gorgeous swath of paint would completely transform the room.
Or maybe your body has changed and you haven’t allowed yourself to buy a new wardrobe because you’re not at your ideal weight yet. So in the meantime you wear ill-fitting clothes and hide out, trying not to be seen.
Maybe you know in your heart and mind what the relationship of your dreams really looks and feels like. But the thought of putting yourself “out there” feels terrifying to you because you know that if this relationship shows up in your life, it will change everything. So you avoid social gatherings, you decide that internet dating is too time consuming, and instead you pray, and hope that somehow, someway, that dreamy relationship is going to find you.
When you stop yourself from doing the thing that you know is going to make you feel and look better, and when you come up with a litany of excuses, stories and worst-case scenarios about why you can’t have or do that thing you really desire… you are coming up against a little thing called RESISTANCE.
Of course, when you’re in it, it sure doesn’t feel little! It can feel insurmountable, impossible and enormous in every way, shape and form.
But the truth is that we all come up against one form of resistance or another any time change is calling us. It’s part of the process, and it’s something you shouldn’t be surprised to meet along the way.
You may resist doing the work that needs to be done to start making your life look and feel better to you. You might even resist listening to my free call from last week. Even though it was free, and I’ve made it readily available to you, you might resist even allowing this information into your awareness.
My question for you is, why would you resist this? Why would you avoid the very thing that could make all of the difference in how good your life looks and feels to you? Why would you settle for less than what you truly and deeply desire for yourself?
But this is what we do. We resist how beautiful our lives could really be. We resist having what we really want. We resist those changes that will, in the end, feel so much better to us.
Do you not want more beauty in your life? Do you truly believe that it can’t benefit you in any way? Do you really not have time for it?
Or is it something else that’s in the way… like giving yourself permission to truly enjoy your life and have it be the one you truly desire. For most women, the dream just feels like it can’t really happen, it’s not really possible, and somehow, it’s not okay…
I invite you to really question what’s in the way of you bringing more Beauty into your life. What’s preventing you from doing the very things that will make you feel better, help you look better, and really assist you in living and enjoying your life in ways that you secretly desire?
I invite you to ask these questions of yourself to uncover the deep resistance – often in the form of stories, beliefs and fears – that is truly preventing you from moving in the direction of your dreams.
I also invite you to start taking action on your own behalf. You could spend years – decades even – trying to uncover the belief system or story that is holding you hostage and keeping you in a perpetual state of struggle and suffering.
The truth is, things will only change when you start taking action!
