I recently had a conversation with an incredible woman.
She’s an owner of a 7+ figure business, and an all-around wonderful, powerful, and utterly beautiful person. She shared with me that she knows she has so many beautiful practices that make her life feel amazing, but that for a long list of reasons, she just resists doing them.
She forgets.
She often prioritizes other things first.
She gets tired.
She sometimes tells herself they’re just not that important.
She sometimes doesn’t feel like doing them.
She sometimes just doesn’t want to feel so “high maintenance”.
She makes other things more important than herself.
She gets caught in the momentum of her life and doesn’t keep up with her own needs.
She sometimes just flat out neglects herself.
She carries some guilt when she’s feeling good when so much in the world isn’t.
She often doesn’t show up for herself the way she shows up for other people and things.
If you want to be a leader in your family, your community, your professional life, and in your own life, you do, indeed, have to learn how to lead yourself first. Leading yourself first starts with honoring and showing up for yourself. Everyday.
One of the keys to learning to lead yourself first is to let who you really are lead the way.
Not who you’ve been taught you have to be, but who you really are.
When you’re clear about who you really are, it’s much easier to cut through any resistance you might have about taking care of and honoring yourself.
So, what do you need to lead? What makes you look and feel your best? What puts a bounce in your step, a song in your heart, and gets your blood pumping in the best possible way? What are the ways you can honor and lead yourself to be the very best version of you?
Do you feel amazing when you exercise first thing in the morning?
Does your body tell you that you do better without that cup of coffee in the morning?
Do you need to eat regularly throughout the day to support your blood sugar levels?
Do you feel nourished by regular social time… or quiet time?
Do you need more sleep when you’re menstruating?
Do you need help unwinding from your work day so you can sleep well at night?
Does tracking your finances on a mobile app make you feel like the queen of your world?
Do long cuddles with your kids or your 4-legged loved ones fill you up?
Does reading something inspiring before you get out of bed in the morning set the perfect tone for your day?
Pay attention to what feels good to you. Make a list of the things that light you up. Notice what foods, beverages, kinds of exercise and amount of sleep helps your body thrive. Do more of what works for you, less of what doesn’t. These are the things that will help you lead yourself.
So many women feel guilty or high maintenance or selfish for doing these kinds of things for themselves. They feel like they have to put their responsibilities or other people first.
But learning to lead yourself has the power to change your life for the better.
The ways you support yourself and the work you do on yourself can literally change the world.
This is not selfish work. It’s essential to creating the kind of world we all want to live in – and the very best version of you!
We all have an opportunity to do things differently as we emerge from quarantine restrictions and the protests and riots for social justice of recent weeks.
These times require more courage and leadership than ever – especially in your own life.
Why not become the leader you’re meant to be in your own life? Why not really show up for yourself like this? Why not create the freedom, joy and most fulfilling life you can imagine?
You, living your most self-honoring life… This is how you can change the world for the better.
