I’m a big believer in signs – those divine messages and nudges that tell you that you’re on the right path, you’ve made the right decision, or that it’s time for you to make a change of some kind.

My experience with signs is that they come in different forms. Some are subtle – like a whisper or a butterfly kiss. Others are more like a frying pan upside the head – completely unmistakable!

Sometimes signs can be a clear directive, an affirmation to a question that you’re holding, or a reassurance that everything and every one is going to be okay.

I remember a funeral for a high school classmate who had tragically died in a small airplane accident. At her burial, her mother cried out, “Show us a sign!” and in the moments that followed, a small airplane flew overhead. We all saw it and knew that we were being given a sign that she had heard us. I still get goose bumps when I think about it.

There are also signs that are more like a clear directive.

In a documentary I saw recently about Julian Lennon, he shared that he and his father had talked about death and dying on more than one occasion. John told Julian that should he pass away, if there was some way of letting him know he was okay – that we are all going to be okay – that the message would come to him in the form of a White Feather.

While Julian was on tour in Australia for his album “Photograph Smile”, he was presented a white feather by an aboriginal tribal elder who asked Julian for his help in bringing awareness to the plight of his people and to others who were suffering the same. In that moment, Julian knew that this endeavor – to give a voice and support those who cannot be heard – was a part of his destiny.

Yes. Signs are everywhere. But how do you know it’s a sign? Let me tell you a little about what I’ve learned about signs over the years.

I used to think that if something didn’t come easily, or if I encountered any roadblocks along the way, that it was a sign that “it wasn’t meant to be”, or that “the timing wasn’t right”. I think quite differently about this now.

What I understand now is that meeting resistance along the way is really a part of every journey. So if I want to sign up for a coaching program, but my credit card is declined again and again for no logical reason, I no longer believe that this is a sign telling me that I shouldn’t sign up for the program. Instead, I contact my bank to find out what the issue is!

Sometimes things happen along the way to help us become who we need to be in order to fully receive everything we desire. Knowing this, I take a more powerful stance in my life instead of believing that everything is up to fate, destiny, or the whims of an online payment system.  😉

When I desire to experience or enjoy something I set an intention to have or receive those things and then I take focused, inspired action toward them. If I meet resistance along the way, I remember the intention that I set out with in the beginning, and I reassess.

Do I still desire that experience or thing? What else might need to happen, or what new information do I need in order to receive it?

I may have to do more or show up differently or transcend an obstacle in order to have what I desire – whether it’s receiving more abundance and wealth in my life, have a baby, create my dream business, or feel healthy, powerful, strong and alive in my body. When I’m clear on my intention, I will continue to take inspired action toward those things I desire until I receive them or something even better.

So how do you read the true signs that show up in your life?

For me, a true sign is something that I feel in my heart is a message of some kind. I believe that receiving and reading the signs that come your way is about getting quiet and letting the sign speak to your intuition. Your mind will have one story or interpretation about it, and your heart will likely have a different, and usually more accurate one.

I know that I’ve landed on a truth about a sign when I feel more at peace, or more excited and inspired about whatever I’ve asked about than I did before the sign arrived. Even if it’s a sign that something big needs to change and that change feels scary or like walking into the great unknown to me, I’ll know that it’s a sign because it resonates as truth in my entire body. It’s not something I’ve made up a story about, or something that feels disempowering in some way.

It’s always a full body feeling that, even if it’s hard or scary to look at, it’s TRUE.

In the past, I’ve received signs in my dreams, or I’ve heard a voice speak very clearly to me right before I wake. But not every sign comes in a subtle or “supernatural” form. I’ve also had some pretty jarring events take place in my life that forever changed the trajectory of my choices and lifestyle. Those were definitely “frying pan upside the head” kind of signs!

A dear friend of mine had something similar happen. She was trying to make a decision about whether she should sign up for a $100,000 coaching program. She knew in her heart that it was the right decision for her to sign up, but her mind was going absolutely crazy with it. She had asked for a sign the night before, but was so preoccupied with the largess of her decision that she was still unable to commit on the day her application was due.

Then, another woman who had signed up for the program came up to her and asked her about where she was with her decision. When my friend told her that she was still undecided, this woman grabbed her by the arm, marched her over to the registration table, and stood by her side until she signed up! To this day, my friend says it was the best decision she’s ever made for herself.

Now that’s a clear message!

The most powerful way that I’ve seen signs work as an incredible form of support is when: 1) you ask for a sign, and 2) you’re clear on what has to happen to you for it to register with you as a sign. When your intention to receive guidance in the form of a sign is this clear, you can’t deny or rationalize the message or sign away when it comes up.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 20+ years of personal and spiritual growth, it’s how incredibly important it is to allow your soul, or something bigger, to guide you. This is the most important ingredient to success and living the life that you dream of.

It’s essential because you’ll know that you are receiving the unwavering support and guidance of something greater than you as you make your way through this journey we call life.

It’s also important because as you walk further on your path, as you raise the bar for yourself and set bigger goals and higher standards for your life, and when you decide you’re ready to step into your next chapter that will require something new, something more from you… you’re going to need this level of guidance more and more with each benchmark, achievement and level you meet.

What signs are presenting themselves to you right now?

Is there a subtle restlessness or a mild feeling of discontent in your belly? Or are you ripe and ready for an upgrade or change of some kind and you know it? Maybe there are subtle signs showing up for you that change is in the air, or perhaps there are signs all around you, colluding to move you in a particular direction.

Maybe life feels too fast and full to even consider if you’re being nudged in a particular direction or not. It’s so common today to feel over stimulated and overwhelmed by everything that is vying for your energy and attention.

Just remember, moving through your life without this essential wisdom and support is a bit like being blind, in a dark room, looking for a black cat!
