There’s so much intensity right now. So much to be heartbroken by. So much work to be done.
Please don’t judge or criticize yourself if you’re tired right now. If little things seem big. If you require more TLC than usual. All of this is a sign that you’re overwhelmed and overwhelm is an okay thing to be feeling.
Overwhelm is a natural and necessary response to the tremendous things we’re seeing in the world today. It’s there to nurture your nervous system and keep you from being overcome and devastated by everything that’s happening right now.
There are many ways to support yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed. I’ve seen many people talking about how important it is to breathe. Ground. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, enough rest. Take media breaks. Move your body to discharge energy and emotion. Watch a comedy or something to take your heart and mind off of things. And more.
Yes. All of these things are brilliant, important and effective.
And, I want to invite you to do something in addition to all of the above.
I want to invite you to make this, now, you, life, everything that’s going on… make it sacred.
Make your tears, your outrage, your confusion, your grief, your guilt, your heartbreak… sacred.
Make the sunrise, the sunset, the sweet flickering moments of the day, the meal prep, the laundry, the cleaning of the toilets, the mundane monotony… make it all sacred.
Make the laughter, good feelings, silly times and good moments sacred.
Make the messy, chaotic, ugly, uncomfortable and painful sacred, too.
When we make something sacred, we…
Slow down
Notice
Take it in
Let ourselves be moved
Give it our respect
Allow ourselves to be deeply nourished, empowered and changed by it
When we make something sacred, we let it imprint its message onto our hearts so that we can be nourished, cracked open, mystified, inspired and transformed by it.
So, now. Today. What can you make sacred? What can you offer your time, your attention, your respect and your very self to?
Sit down, appreciate and give thanks for the food you eat. Honor that time and that meal. Your life would be very different without it. Make it sacred.
Honor your eyes, ears, arms, hands, legs, feet, your 5 bodily senses, your beating heart, the very breath that moves in and out of your body. Your life would be very different without them. Make them sacred.
Make your voice and your very words sacred. They have meaning, impact and power. Your life would be very different if you did not have a voice or could not speak.
Stop running and distracting and instead slow down to honor your feelings. They are here to inform and empower you. Can you even imagine a life without them? Make them sacred.
Make the daily routine, the humdrum, the usual, the easy-to-overlook parts of your day sacred. They are so often the very foundation upon which our lives are built. Without them, your life would be very different.
Make your imagination, intuition, creativity and inner guidance sacred. They are your wise council. Your life would be very different without them.
Make the falling apart, the destruction, the ending and the nothingness sacred. They are necessary for rebirth and the start of something new.
Make your overwhelm, sense of defeat, devastation and grief sacred. They serve a powerful purpose. Let them do what they are here to do. Let them change you.
Make this life sacred.
Make this time in history sacred.
Make your choices sacred.
Honor yourself as sacred.
Light a candle. Dance. Cry. Pray. Create art. Protest. Rest. Receive support. Love. Sing. Donate. Write. Laugh. Give. Nourish. Collaborate. Question. Listen. Learn. Integrate.
And do it all with honor, truth and conviction of heart.
Choose to make it all sacred. This is how we can honor ourselves and our very lives as sacred. Because in the end, all of it, every last moment, is.
