We live in a culture, and a time on this planet, when the dominant way of operating and functioning on a day-to-day basis is to focus on productivity and doing. If we were to correlate this orientation to life (and what we’re all supposed to be doing to support that orientation to life), we’d say we are a culture that has been functioning in perpetual “summer”.
We are in a steady, unrelenting, persistent, consistent, unquestioning mode of do, go, push, perform, produce.
As such, our value and worth are often based on how constructive and efficient we’re being. The first question we often ask someone when we meet them is, “What do you do?”
Do you ever feel guilt for just resting for a day? Like you’re lazy for taking a nap? Or that being sick is really going to negatively impact your work and your image at work?
So much of our very identities have become dependent upon how much we do, and how “successful” we are – based upon a set of criteria that someone else has determined for us.
This is why, when we see what is happening to our world that’s been so dependent upon constant productivity, it can feel like the world is falling apart, our place in it has become uncertain, and that everything is in complete and utter crisis and ruin.
Our incessant masculine march of doing, achieving, and steady output has been brought to a full STOP, and it can feel disorienting, frustrating, terrifying and deeply disturbing.
We can go into full panic and fear – 2 completely healthy and normal reactions to what is happening right now. And then we can find our courage, uncurl from the fetal position, and start to consider how we want to respond to what’s happening.
Because our response is where our power lives.
Right now, we all have a long overdue opportunity to…
Rest.
Reflect.
Feel.
Listen.
Get curious.
Dream.
Play.
Purge.
Clarify.
Rearrange.
… and Rebirth ourselves.
Each of us gets to choose how we come out of this.
Do we come out of this, knowing that we’ve changed, and the world around us has changed, only to meet those changes with the same way of doing things? The same orientation to life? The same constant and maniacal work mode? The same health-and-happiness-sacrificing modus operandi? The same abandonment and erasure of self?
Or will we step into the opportunity that is staring us all in the face – to go within and find the new way that wants to emerge?
A new way that…
Honors the sacredness of our physical bodies.
Enhances our vitality and overall health.
Supports our dreams.
Feels good to us.
Allows our gifts to sparkle and shine.
Nourishes our needs.
Increases our happiness.
Prioritizes our wellbeing on every level.
Emphasizes pleasure, delight and enjoyment.
Enables us to flourish, evolve and grow.
Somehow, we’ve been living and working in a way that is at war with these very sensible, invaluable concepts as if they are the very opposite of efficiency and fruitfulness!
But what if they are actually the foundation of productivity?
What if they truly enhance how you show up in the world?
What if this new way of working and being in the world that wants to emerge is the true road to creating the freedom, joy, and most fulfilling life you can imagine?
How much would your life change for the better?
How much would your energy and health improve?
How different, and better, would your relationships be?
How much more would you be capable of earning?
How inspired would you feel every day, no matter if you’re in work mode, mama mode, or partner mode?
My invitation to you is to let his time feel as uncomfortable as it is. Let yourself have your feelings about all of it – your grief, your rage, your fear…
And when you are ready, let the change that is happening to all of us guide you home to yourself, to what is true in your heart, to how you want to come out of all of this, and who you want to be.
Use this time to find your way forward – a way that supports and honors all of who you are, all of the roles you play, and all of your amazing-ness that wants to touch the world and make it the beautiful place we all want to live in.
