Just a few months ago, while I was driving to pick my son up from preschool, I was in a very painful dialogue with myself. It was one of those not-so-good-feeling inner conversations (ever have those?) where I was feeling a deep, deep longing inside of myself, and a lot of pain around that longing at the same time.
It was a familiar feeling for me, actually. I’d had similar conversations with myself before that felt chest-clenching and tummy-churning like that. But this time was different. This time I realized I needed to turn towards the pain I was feeling instead of trying to push it away, or wallowing in it.
Even though it felt like I was turning towards a scary, slobbering monster, I did.
I turned towards the pain and I asked it why it was there. I asked it what it wanted me to know, and how it was there to help me. It’s reply changed everything in an instant.
It said, “I’m here because you really want something that you believe you can’t have.”
In that moment I realized that my pain was coming from a story I’d been telling myself for decades (maybe my entire life!). The “I can’t have what I really want” story had kept me always an arm’s length away from what I really wanted. It also meant I was perpetually choosing and settling for something less – in nearly every area of my life.
The stories we tell ourselves are POWERFUL. They influence our decisions. They create our realities. And they deeply impact what we believe is and isn’t possible for us.
This is true when it comes to our finances, our relationships, our sex life, our appearance, our health and vitality, and more. The stories we tell ourselves about what is or isn’t possible for us, about what we can or can’t have, about who can and can’t be… they either liberate and elevate us, or they keep us trapped.
When I realized that I didn’t believe that story anymore, and that I knew I could have what I really wanted, I thanked that old belief for all of the ways it had kept me small and safe in the past. I thanked it for what it had taught me, and the contrast it had shown me. And then I told it that I was ready to let it go.
And when I did, the pain dissipated. The inner war ended. And I felt… Free. Excited. Giddy. And like the biggest weight had been lifted.
So many women have a story about what is and isn’t possible for them when it comes to how they look, and how they feel. It’s one of, if not the biggest obstacle women face when they want to activate their vitality, beauty and power. And because it’s not something external and obvious, it gets overlooked more often than not.
What story are you telling yourself?
Do you believe you can have what you want? Or have you been telling yourself a story that says there’s something wrong with you? Is it a story that feels heartbreaking, soul-crushing, and like you’re being held captive? Or is it one that leaves you feeling liberated, expansive, excited and hopeful?
You don’t have to believe everything story you think. You get to choose. What will you choose?
