Traditionally, aging in our youth-obsessed culture means marginalization. Once the wrinkles add up and the grey hairs take over it’s kind of like you become invisible. And that invisibility can usher in a lot of fear.
As we age, we’re faced with a lot of erroneous cultural stories and assumptions. It’s as if our purpose and value declines, and we find ourselves wrestling with a lot of inner and outer demons.
Am I still attractive and desirable?
Will my partner still love me?
Will I get overlooked at work?
Am I as credible as I used to be?
Will people take me seriously?
Have I become invisible?
Will anyone want to date me?
Am I still lovable?
Can you feel how our cultural messages around aging imply that we’re no longer powerful?
Can you feel how our fears around aging can have a seriously negative impact on your confidence and health?
But what if…
Aging could really be about reclamation, transcendence and freedom?
Aging could be about feeling more comfortable in your own skin than ever before, and radiating your beauty and power from the inside out?
What if…
You didn’t have to age like your mother, or anyone else in your family?
You could define aging for yourself and do it your way?
There’s a powerful way to address this inside of ourselves. We can either buy into what we’re being told, or we can turn the cultural messaging on its head and create our own definition of what it means to age. We can even make our definition of aging one that doesn’t involve comparing ourselves to a bottle of wine, or making a mockery of the incredible privilege it is to grow into ourselves and our wisdom over time.
I invite you to take 5-6 minutes out of your day or week (seriously, set a timer for 5 or 6 minutes, that’s all you’ll need!) and answer the following questions. They’ll help get clear on your current relationship to aging and what it could look and feel like if you were to redefine it for yourself. I know you’ll be amazed at what you discover!
- What is the biggest limiting belief that you have about aging?
- When you look at your limiting belief about aging, how does it relate to your beliefs about your own value and self-worth?
- What would you like to believe instead?
- What would be different for you – inside of yourself and in your life – if you operated under this new belief?
When you create a new definition of aging for yourself – a definition that feels…
…enlivening,
…that supports and promotes your vitality
…that enhances your radiance and invites more life force to flow through you
…you no longer give your power away to what others, or the culture at large, says is and isn’t possible for you.
Instead of feeling like you’re losing control as you age, you can choose to honor yourself every step of the way – starting with how you hold the idea and experience of aging inside of yourself.
