When you’re in an adrenalized state of getting sh*t done, it’s addictive. It feels so good to be productive.
It makes us feel powerful and important. Like our lives mean something. Like we have a purpose.
But it’s a slippery slope. Our adrenalized ambition can take over.
It can override our body’s need for rest. It can make us feel guilty if we stop – even when we’re ill. It can push us to our physical breaking point and have us feel ashamed for not being able to keep up with its demands.
It turns out that slowing down or stopping is far more complex than anyone might believe.
Many of my clients have been overriding their bodies for so long that it feels unnatural to slow down or stop.
What do I tell them?
There are decades of behavior patterns and beliefs that are getting in the way of you giving yourself permission to rest and get more sleep.
Patterns like going to bed after 10pm, staring at a screen for more than 4 hours a day, drinking caffeine and eating sugar to keep yourself going, and telling yourself you’ll stop after you get one more thing done…
Beliefs that tie your self-worth to your productivity, your value to your accomplishments, and your need for rest to laziness…
All of these are hurting you. And over time, the net result of ignoring your body adds up. There is a cumulative effect.
You are the one who will have to pay that debt to your body and yourself.
