Beauty is something I’ve always appreciated. Whether it’s a gorgeous view, an exquisite article of clothing, a bold piece of art, or a fruit plate presented just so, beauty is something that consistently lights me up and injects a sense of wonder and awe into what would otherwise be just another moment.
I called upon beauty earlier this week when I was having a rough day. I didn’t feel good and I was feeling particularly emotional about it. After nearly 6 years of struggling with my health I felt angry and got pretty teary about yet another moment in time when I just couldn’t function like I wanted to.
So, I decided to go into my closet and call upon a little beauty to support me through that tumultuous time.
I grabbed a bright pink scarf, my “I feel pretty” dangly earrings (because they do make me feel pretty!), and a cute pair of pink and gold sneakers (cuz they make me feel like a superhero). I donned a little sheer lip gloss and viola. I felt renewed.
Changing my outfit literally changed my entire outlook for the rest of the day. It’s amazing how powerful beauty truly is.
I share this with you because we all have our ups and downs, no matter how evolved or awake or aware we are. Life is life – unpredictable and sometimes outright challenging. Beauty is something you can use to support yourself through the twists and turns of life.
Whether it’s a single flower by your bedside, a piece of jewelry that lights you up, a brightly colored pillow or blanket on your bed, or a public garden that you spend time in when the flowers are in bloom, or the trees are shedding their leaves.
My invitation to you is to look for beauty today – in the trees that are budding, the sound of shared laughter, the taste of a fresh berry as it passes your lips.
Let it soothe, electrify, enliven and inspire you – through color, sound, smell, taste and touch.
Look for the ways you can deliberately incorporate it into your day – through clothing, an extended moment with a sunrise, a kind word, a dab of your favorite scent, a swath of lipstick or a song you listen to while you eat your breakfast.
Lean into beauty. Let it buoy you. When you feel like you’re falling down, let it lift you up.
