Summer months mean SUNSHINE, and with sunshine comes the added responsibility of taking care of our skin. A little sun exposure is a great way to get a daily dose of Vitamin D, but too much sun can mean sunburn, premature skin aging and sun spots. What’s the best way to take care of your skin during the summer months? Here are 5 tips to take your skin in a healthy direction this summer.
1) Don’t be terrified of the sun! A daily dose of 10-20 minutes of early morning or late afternoon sun can do wonders for your vitamin D levels. The lighter your complexion, the less amount of time you will need to accomplish this. Vitamin D is absolutely vital for healthy nutrient absorption, strong bones and a healthy immune system, regulating blood pressure and reducing stress and tension in the body.
2) The sun is most powerful between the hours of 11:30a- 2:30p. If you’re outside during this time, or if you’re going to be exposed longer than 10-20 minutes, find a chemical-free sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more. I love the “ALBA Botanicals” and “BADGER” brands, both found in health food stores. Their formulas are non-whitening, water-resistant and they smell good, too!
3) Drinking plenty of purified or spring water is a great way to maintain beautiful skin health all year long. In the summer, when we’re active and outside more often, staying hydrated is KEY to beautiful, glowing and radiant skin. Drink half your body weight in ounces every day; drink more if you are sweating and more active.
4) Cover up! Sometimes the best way to protect your skin is to cover it up. Find a light-weight long sleeved shirt that feels cool and good against your skin, or use a beautiful shawl or stylish light-weight pashmina to protect your shoulders and back. Both are also great accessories to your favorite sundress! Sun hats or visors are a great way to protect your face and neck, and can be worn poolside, in the garden or while you’re out for your morning walk or run.
5) Moisturize your skin with chemical and paraben-free lotions and/or body oils. You can keep your skin healthy, supple and glowing by adding a layer of moisturizing protection after you bathe. I love the “Dr. Hauschka” brand body oils and lotions. They add a weightless layer of soothing moisture to my skin without the addition of chemicals and parabens that mimic estrogens and carcinogenic compounds found in many skin care products today.
Nurture yourself by taking care of your skin this summer. After all, feeling good in your skin is where feeling good about yourself really begins!
